As mentioned in my post on How To Use A Pizza Stone there are four different types available:
- cast iron
- ceramic
- stainless steel
- cordierite stone.
These Pizza Stones have all one thing in common. They produce beautiful, delicious, scrumptious pizza with a crispy crust and brown bottom crust. The days of soggy pizzas are over!
The differences are in the size, price, weight and probably how quick they cook the pizza. I review these pizza stones in no particular order. Which one you would prefer comes down to your personal preference and taste.
Let’s get started.

Cast Iron Pizza Pan
size: 14″
weight: 8lbs
Warranty: 100% Money-Back-Guarantee
Pros:
You can use this pre-seasoned cast iron pan straight away. It has got sturdy loop handles so you can quickly take it out of the oven.
This pan provides fast even heating and retains the heat for an extended period.
The cool thing about cast iron is that nothing sticks. That also means that cleaning is a breeze. Just wipe it with a cloth.
I do love that this cast iron pan is so versatile. You can also use it for grilling veggies or meat, bake fries or cookies, make pancakes, etc. You can even put it on the bbq or over an open fire. The possibilities are endless. You can use this pan on the stove top as well, unlike the other pizza stones.
There are no cons here. I love it, and I think this pan is a kitchen utensil everyone should have.
Black Ceramic Pizza Stone
size: 15″
weight: 6lbs
thickness: 3/8.”
Warranty: according to the manufacturer, this product is guaranteed to last a lifetime
Pros:
This ceramic pizza stone has received awesome reviews on Amazon.com.
It doesn’t need to be seasoned so you can use it straight away. The ceramic stone is glazed to prevent that pizza, sauce or cheese stick onto the surface.
It is easy to clean. Just wipe it with a wet cloth and you are done. This pizza stone is durable and odorless.
It is also suitable to put on the grill or bbq.
You can use it for baking bread, quesadillas or cookies. I like that it also comes with a free pizza cutter. That’s great value for money!
There are no major cons here. I’d just like to mention that a nice feature would be some handles to allow for easy remove from the oven.
Overall, an excellent pizza stone that will produce a scrumptious pizza.
Nerd Chef Steel Stone
size: 16″x14.25″x25″
thickness: 0.25.”
weight: 23lbs (no lightweight!)
Warranty: you can’t break steel! Lasts a lifetime guaranteed
Pros
This steel stone is pre-seasoned with organic flaxseed oil and is ready to go. It is very similar to a cast iron pan.
The surface has a smooth texture that is non-stick. A nice little feature is the finger holes. You can move the stone quickly, and you could even hang it up on the wall.
I do like the square shape. So you are not restricted to a certain size of the pizza or other items you might like to cook.
Another big plus for me is that this steel is made from premium steel and made in the USA.
This stone is a well-made quality product that will last a lifetime and will produce a delicious pizza. You can use it on a grill or bbq as well.
Highly recommended!
Cordierite Pizza Stone
size: 14″
thickness: 3/4.”
weight:7.4lbs
Warranty: 90-day money-back-guaranteed
Pros
Cordierite stone is a mineral that can handle extreme temperatures but can also handle changes in temperature from very low to very hot or vice versa.
Therefore the stone is hard to break which is great to know. This is a durable and sturdy stone that will last for years.
It is easy to clean, maybe needs a bit of a scrub now and again. Like the other stones, you can use it on the grill or charcoal bbq as well.
The stone will darken over time, but I don’t think that is an issue at all.
Cons: The only minor drawback is that you have to pre-season your stone before you can use it.
The good news is that the manufacturer will send you an ebook with detailed instructions plus two recipes, for one pizza and one artisan bread. That is cool.
Overall, this is a great attractive looking pizza stone that will bake a wonderful pizza to impress friends and family.

Hey Nice reviews of pizza stones. I have always tried to figure out the best way to cook a pizza in the oven. It is always hard to get that perfect crust. I have also found it to be very hard to get a good recipe for the dough. So which one of these are your favorite ones to use?
Hi Calvin, I personally use the cast iron pan, because it is so versatile. Here is my best recipe for pizza dough. You might like to check it out.
Thanks Anke
Great article, I never realized there were so many options for pizza preparation until reading your article.
Cast iron cookware is a very good investment, the cost is worth the quality and the long-term use you will get from them.
It would be cool to have my own pizza oven, sure would beat the oven I have at home.
Thanks for your comment! Yes, a pizza oven is a great investment for sure. Until then it is a good alternative to use a pizza stone.
Best, Anke
Hi Anke,
Thanks for this really handy review of the best pizza stones. I’m in the market for a new one so reading your review was a timely piece of good fortune for me. The cast iron pizza stone looks like just the thing for me. I’m in the market because my current pizza stone does not have handles. Getting it safely in and out of the oven is an issue. I also like the idea of being able to use it on the barbecue. We barbecue frequently and I think this will work well. Thanks again!
Hi Linda, I am glad this article has helped you in making a decision. I agree with you, handles are so important to move the pizza stone safely. I personally use the cast iron pan as well. It is so versatile and it will last for generations to come.
Thanks for your feedback!
Best, Anke
We recently bought a cast iron pan. It has only been used once to make garlic bread rolls which were good. But we need more practise with it and I think trying pizza would be great. I never thought about making cookies with it like you mentioned can be done. I will need to do that for sure!
Hi Summerly, a cast iron pan is incredibly versatile. You can also use it for frying steaks, roast vegetables, on the bbq etc. And, nothing breaks a cast iron pan. That’s why it is one of my favorite things to have in my kitchen. Please let me know how you get on with using it for making pizza. All the best from Anke
