Before I get into more details about our three top picks for the best stand mixer for bread, let’s have a detailed look at features that the best suitable mixer for bread dough should have.
Best Stand Mixer For Bread Features
As I mentioned at the beginning, we are focusing on stand mixers that are mixing large amounts of dough with ease, especially dense bread and pizza dough.
Your usual stand mixer will most likely show problems when it comes to the hard work of kneading more than four cups of flour plus water.
Common problems are a smoking smell from the motor, a burned-out motor, a ‘walking stand mixer’, or the dough riding up the dough hook.
So what makes a great stand mixer to be able to whip up a big batch of pizza or bread dough? What are the important features?
First up we need to look at the wattage. The stand mixer should have at least 500 W of motor power. It should have an all-metal construction for durability, overload protection and should have at least three standard attachments like the whisk, a dough hook, and a beater.
To mix up a large batter, the bowl size has to be at least 6 quarts which equals around 6 liters.
Buying a solid and high-quality mixer also means spending a fair amount of money starting at around $300 and more. It is an investment in the most useful and versatile kitchen tool. Therefore it is important to not only choose a quality brand but also a model that comes with a comprehensive warranty.
The Ankarsrum Original offers the best warranty with 7-years. When it comes to mixing the dense dough the Ankarsrum mixer is a workhorse. Some people call the Ankarsrum the ‘Mercedes’ of stand mixers.
The Most Important Features Of The Best Stand Mixer For Bread Dough In A Nutshell

- It offers the standard attachments.
- A wide range of optional accessories to make the stand mixer even more versatile.

Looking back at the long history of quality and expertise of this brand, built since 1939 in Sweden, the Ankarsrum is a beautifully designed and solidly built kitchen appliance.

What Is The Best Stand Mixer For You
It really boils down to your personal taste, your budget, how often you will use the stand mixer and how much counter space you have in your kitchen.
Ask yourself:
- Will I use the stand mixer at least two or three times a week?
- Do I need to make large batches of bread, pizza, and cookies frequently?
- Do I want a colored mixer to suit my taste and match the color of my kitchen?
- How important is a long-term warranty and customer service to me?
Most stand mixers are designed to stay on the countertop, especially so the KitchenAid Pro 600. It is very heavy, and you don’t want to get it in and out of the cupboard to often.
If you don’t have much space in the kitchen, then the Ankarsrum and Bosch might be the best choice because they are lightweight and a bit smaller than the KitchenAid.
I have found that I make the most out of my stand mixer when leaving it out on the counter. It is too cumbersome to store it away and plus it looks nice as well.
I do love the versatility of a stand mixer with the optional attachments.
The fact that they can be a meat grinder, pasta maker, or even an ice cream maker is appealing to me and makes my cooking and baking so much easier.

I would love to make my own bread and have tried several times to make it by hand. That did not end well. I really liked the Bosch mixer as it is so light compared with the other two. The problem for me is I only want to make a small amount. just one loaf at a time. Is that possible in the Bosch mixer or any of the three mixers you mentioned or do I have to make a large quantity?
Hello Margaret, the Bosch mixer is great for smaller amounts of dough. So no worries there.
What I usually do is I make a big batch of dough, bake a few loafs of bread and put some in the freezer. That way I save on my power bill.
An alternative for making one loaf of bread would be a bread maker. I have found though that a bread made conventionally has a better texture.
Thanks for your comment and Happy Baking!

Hey Anke,
I am only starting to get into making dough for bread so I will have to see how well it goes. I would like to invest in a mixer so that I can make more batches easily for practice. In saying that I also want a product that can offer a lot of versatility incase I can’t get the bread option working.
Thanks
Hi, Chris, well done you for starting to make your own bread. A stand mixer is so versatile since you can also use it for making cookie dough, meringue and other cake batters. With some additional attachments, you can convert a stand mixer into a meat grinder, ice cream machine etc.
I always recommend thinking about how many times a week you are planning to use the stand mixer and to determine from there if it is worth the investment.
Best regards, Anke
Thinking of buying a bread dough mixer since a long time. And i found it. It is really very convenient to use this. I have some of these at my cousin’s house too. Now it is very helpful I am a pizza lover.
and also that bakery breads don’t last much longer. we can make our fresh bread with help of it.
Hey, Hasnain, that is the great thing about stand mixers. You can use them for all sorts of batters and doughs. They are so versatile.
May I ask, which stand mixer do you have?
Thanks, Anke
I use to see my father in the kitchen kneading dough to make home made bread and my mother making pastry for cakes. Now with the aid of these new machines people are now getting back into the kitchen and making home made pastry again. There is nothing better than the smell of fresh home made bread cooking in the oven.I’m sure that this product will help get them skills going again.
Hi Andrew, I do love the smell of freshly made bread at home as well.More and more people are making doughs from scratch instead of buying premade mixtures.
These stand mixers make it easy for everyone to get cake batters and pizza doughs done in no time.
Best, Anke
Hello Anke,
Thanks for the great review. Very interesting 🙂
I daily bake my own bread and two to three times a week pizza and when friends come over they expect fresh pizza. I now make the dough with a simple kitchen machine, which has too many functions and too little power and before I always made it by hand.
I would go for the Kitchenaid because it has about the same design as my Illy coffee machine and I can even order it in the color, which I like 🙂 never expected to find kitchen machines in perfect colours
Farid
Hello Farid, good on you for being such an active pizza and bread dough maker. I make my own bread once a week but intend to increase it a bit.
The Kitchen Aid stand mixer is great with all the different color options. That’s what I like about the Kitchen Aid appliances in general – the variety of colors so everyone will find something that will suit his or her taste.
Thanks so much for your comment!
Happy Baking!

For large batches of dough, having the overload protection I believe is key. I enjoyed reading this article as it sheds a lot of light into what truly makes a good mixer that is capable of mixing large amounts of “dense dough” as you put it.
Do you have one of these yourself, how often do you use it, and what other uses would you recommend it for? I do love my pizza 🙂
Hi Michael, thanks for your comment and interest in stand mixer’s.
Most of my product reviews are based on other peoples experiences (family, friends), a lot of research and evaluating data and product reviews on Amazon, Facebook groups and related forum’s.
My goal is to provide as much valuable information as possible so you, as my reader, don’t have to do the hard work when you are looking for the best products.

I have worked in a gas station/pizza store called Casey’s for almost 2 years, and we used a large standing dough mixer that could probably make enough dough for 40-50 pizzas. Of course with a corporation, something this large is affordable and needed.
At times when it needed to be repaired, kneading the dough by hand was difficult. I am very grateful for the technology we have, as our ancestors had to do it by hand with no other option.
Was I looking for a dough mixer for my home, I would choose the Ankersrum mixer, as it seems to be the most durable, and has the longest warranty. Items like this need to be quality and spending the extra money goes a long way.
Hey Christopher, thank you so much for your comment. Wow, that is so impressive to knead such large amounts of pizza dough. Commercial stand mixers are a class of their own.
Regarding the Ankarsrum, I have to agree with you. The long warranty and durability for this stand mixer are a huge advantage and speak volume for the quality of the appliance. It is worth the investment especially for bread and pizza making enthusiast who would use it at least once or twice a week.
It is not easy to find an appliance nowadays that is build to last.
Cheers and all the best!

Hi Anke
I love the look of the KitchenAid pro 600. It’s weight would be a good feature, as there is less likelihood of the mixer moving around with a big mix.
I have always bought processed bread in the past, but have been thinking about making my own bread. This could be my answer.
Don’t you just love the smell of pizza or bread in an oven. Heaven on a stick. LOL
Cheers
Hi Greg, indeed, the KitchenAid Pro has a sleek design and looks great in any kitchen. As you already said, it doesn’t move on the kitchen bench even with large amounts of batter or dough.
The KitchenAid Pro is definitely a top notch stand mixer for anyone who would like to get started with making home made bread and pizza.
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment.
