I had come across the Blackstone Outdoor Pizza Oven when researching Amazon and a fantastic website called pizzamaking.com.This site, by the way, is an awesome forum where you can ask all sorts of questions and share knowledge regarding pizza, pizza ovens, tools, resources, etc. with like minded pizza enthusiasts.
At first glance, I thought the Blackstone oven is not a wood fired oven, so why bother? But after reading the reviews, I decided it is worth to have a closer look. So my review is based on the good, and not so good customer reviews.
If you are interested in learning more about the Blackstone pizza oven, please read on.
The Blackstone pizza oven has an adjustable 60.000 BTU burner, a push button igniter, and a rotisserie motor which is either run by an AC adapter or by a battery. Therefore it is probably a good idea to put the oven close by a power plugin.
In roughly 15 minutes the oven can reach a temperature of 1000F. That is scorching in a very short time! So make sure to put heatproof gloves on. You can read my recommendation here.
The pizza is placed on a pizza stone 17″ wide which is continuously rotated by the motor. Another stone is mounted above the cooking area as well which creates a convection oven type heat. The pizza cooks evenly in 2 -3 minutes.
Most customers recommend turning down the heat a bit as otherwise it might be too hot and burns the pizza. I guess it always takes some time to get used cooking with a new oven. That is just part of the process.
What To Like About The Blackstone Outdoor Pizza Oven
- The oven looks stylish with the stainless steel and black exterior.
- It is easy to clean. You just need to wipe the pizza stone. The oven itself doesn’t get dirty.
- Most customers say it easy to assemble. You might need another person to help you.
- The oven is portable.
- You can adjust the cooking temperature.
- You can also cook other dishes like lasagne, roasts, steaks, bread and much more. Have fun experimenting!
- The oven heats up ultra fast.
- The oven costs just a fraction of what a wood fired pizza oven would cost. At the moment you can get it for less than $300 on Amazon. That is remarkable value for money.
What Are The Drawbacks
A few customers complained that some pieces have arrived broken or with dents. Some had issues with the pizza stone cracking after awhile.
The good news is that Blackstone’s customer service is excellent, and they respond very quickly to concerns, questions and replaced faulty items.
Some Additional Things You will Need
As mentioned before, there are a few things you will need in addition to the oven.
Here is my short bullet list:
- heatproof gloves and a pizza peel
- an infrared thermometer to measure the exact temperature
- a propane tank
- a 1 AA battery for the ignition
- a Blackstone pizza oven cover to protect it when you leave the oven outside
Some Helpful Tips
Here are some tips from users who have been cooking with the Blackstone oven for a while.
#1 Heat up the oven on high until you reach the desired temperature. Turn the heat down when you cook your pizza to prevent it from burning.
#2 Put cornmeal on your pizza peel, so the pizza slides easily off onto the pizza stone.
#3 Before you put the pizza on, stop the rotating motor for a moment. Otherwise, it might be tricky to place the pizza on the stone.
#4 When you set up the motor, make sure it is leveled. Adjust if necessary.
To round it all up, I think the Blackstone Outdoor Pizza is a great alternative to a wood-fired pizza oven.
It heats up ultra fast, you don’t need to deal with ashes and dust, the pizzas turn out to be tasty and have a nice texture, and it costs just a fraction of what a wood-fired oven would cost.
